Goals:
  • Respect the historic nature of the home.
  • Open the existing space by removing a closet and wall to utilize the entire space to its fullest.
  • Create a kitchen that would welcome a large family “home” and provide a space that could serve multiple cooks and family members.
Details:

“The Castle” was designed and built by the renowned architect, Harold Crawford in 1929.  Beyond Kitchens was honored to remodel the kitchen in 2015.  The new kitchen has historic features and details respecting the lineage of the home, but includes all the necessities a 21st century kitchen.  A mixture of white, dark blue and stained cabinetry enhances the overall style of the room.  The unique 60” Aga range, tiled hood and large island are the focal points and “heart” of this renovated room.

Details:

The floor plan of this 1958 home was featured in the Better Homes and Gardens magazine for its “state-of-the-art” features at the time it was built. Now—57 years later—its design needed updating to meet current standards. The owners had dreamed of a new kitchen for 15 years prior to reaching out to a remodeler. Beyond Kitchens listened to them describe their dream home and proceeded to design and build a new, open space by removing a wall between the kitchen and living/dining area.

Details:

The owners of this 1939 home had thought about remodeling their kitchen for a number of years but struggled with a plan. The problem was how to integrate a mid-century family room addition and adjoining dark hallways into the new kitchen and still maintain the traditional flavor of their home.

When they hired Beyond Kitchens to design and remodel their kitchen; they were able to choose from three plans that had been designed for their completed kitchen space. After personalizing their plan, Beyond Kitchens took over the remodeling process and created the beautiful, open and functional space you see today.

Beyond Kitchens Bathroom Gallery
Retro Black & White Bathroom
Problem/Shortcomings:

The original master bathroom was SMALL! No room in front of the toilet and a shower that was difficult to move in. There was a lack of storage space.

Goals:

Enlarge the bathroom and provide the bathroom with a "retro" style that was similar to their main bathroom.

Details:

The existing master bathroom was enlarged by stealing space from an adjacent closet, moving a wall into the master bedroom by 8" and changing the location of the bathroom entry door. These small enlargements allowed for a generous shower, longer vanity space and the space in front of the toilet that is required by current plumbing codes. Black and white details were added in the floor and wall tiles. A custom floral, decorative tile was created to match both the black and white theme and the "retro" style that the client was recreating.

Stylish Comtemporary Bath (his)
Problem/Shortcomings:

The original bath was a basic bath with a vanity, toilet and tub/shower combination. Style and storage were lacking.

Goals:

Create a walk-in shower with hand-held shower and seat. Provide a place for storage of robes and laundry.

Details:

The depth of the existing tub/shower combination was increased by 4 inches. The new shower-only area features a digital shower system that controls temperature and shower spray and includes a hand-held shower and shower seat. The vanity area features a tall cabinet that conceals both robe storage and laundry. In addition, the vanity has an unusual Cygnus Granite top that looks like birch bard and a back splash that goes to the ceiling of Zebrano Vein-cut Brushed tile that adds a very stylish and masculine look. The vanity mirror is back-lit with LED lights.

Garden Window Kitchen
Problem/Shortcomings:

The original kitchen was terribly outdated (original 1930's kitchen) and in need of new appliances. The space was cut off from the rest of the house both physically and visually. The view to the garden area at the back of the house was inhibited by a series of old, double-hung windows.

Goals:

Maintain the traditional style of the rest of the house but connect the other living areas to the kitchen. Light, airy feeling.

Details:

New painted cabinetry. New granite counter tops and ceramic tiled back splash. Hardwood floors were installed in the kitchen area to match those in the rest of the house. A new full-view, "awning-type" window was installed in the kitchen to take advantage of the garden vista.

Gourmet Coffee Kitchen
Problem/Shortcoming:

The original kitchen was small and divided awkwardly by a two-tier peninsula. A pantry closet in the kitchen was terribly under-utilized. The central light fixture was inadequate. The homeowner longed for top-quality cooking appliances.

Goals:

Provide a kitchen space that was larger, more functional and open to the rest of the main floor living area. Provide cabinetry that fit height of the tall homeowners. Provide space for the homeowner's coffee passion.

Details:

A specialized coffee area was created by providing deeper base cabinets and upper cabinets with corbels to contain the area. A central work island with storage on all sides provided a larger work space. A corner "hidden" pantry, built-in refrigerator and ovens replaced the under-utilized pantry closet space.

Island Kitchen
Problem/Shortcoming:

The original kitchen, although large, was very dysfunctional because of the strange angles of the existing walk-in pantry and island. It was also separated from the rest of the open-concept home.

Goals:

The original kitchen, although large, was very dysfunctional because of the strange angles of the existing walk-in pantry and island. It was also separated from the rest of the open-concept home.

Details:

The angled, walk-in pantry was removed to utilize the large expanse of space available to the kitchen. A large island with cooktop and vegetable sink was double the size of the original island, and functioned for both cooking and entertaining. The kitchen was opened to the living/ dining area using a peninsula that provided both storage and entertaining function.
